Bon Voyage

Friday was my last day at my hateful job. I had a great last day. I practically skipped out of there, and all my fellow workers seemed genuinely sad to see me go. They gave me a nice card and a balloon, and I got some beautiful roses from one of my judges, fresh from his garden. It totally hasn’t hit me yet that I NEVER HAVE TO GO BACK. But maybe after a few days of sleeping in and a nice, extended trip home to see my parents and my grandma for her 87th birthday, it will start to sink in.

“Polls are the genital warts of election year”

God I love Mark Morford. Another great column about infuriating, confusing polls, those “Undecided” voters out there, and that asks the question: “Who are these fucking people?”

The national ban on military-style assault weapons will expire on Monday, September 13th, unless President Bush and Congress act now. President Bush promised to renew the ban, but instead he’s letting it expire — he has refused to call on Congress to deliver it for his signature.

For 10 years the assault weapons ban has taken the deadliest weapons off our streets, cutting their use in crimes 66 percent. But beginning Tuesday the 14th, an 18-year-old will once again be able to buy an AK-47 assault rifle in most states.

We can stop this if we speak up now. President Bush and Congress must renew the assault weapons ban, not let it expire. Please join me in demanding it, at:

My new favorite site

Please take some time and check out a great site a friend just referred me to: Talking Points Memo by Joshua Micah Marshall, a writer from DC who writes about politics, culture and foreign affairs. This is a great site full of wondeful tidbits like this:

Coincidences are the strangest things …
AP: ‘U.S. death toll in Iraq passes 1,000 mark’ … 4:27 PM, Sept. 7th, 2004
AP: ‘Ridge: Terrorists hope to disrupt election’ … 4:40 PM, Sept. 7th, 2004

1000 and counting

The death toll of US soldiers in Iraq hit 1000 today. There have also been about 7,000 soldiers wounded. Let’s bring them home before we lose any more.

Best wishes to President Bill Clinton who will be having quadruple bypass surgery tomorrow.

“All hat, no cattle.”

Salon.com has a great article about Kerry’s reaction to the RNC this week. Kerry’s campaign did the exact right thing last night when they had Kerry respond immediately from Ohio after Bush’s speech, taking the attention off Bush. He was fired up and responded directly. “We’ve had insults, we’ve had anger from Republicans,” Kerry said. “And I’ll tell you why … They can’t talk about their record because it is a record of failure, so all they do is attack.” (You may have to watch a short ad in order to access the article on Salon) [link via snarkcake]
