The new member of the family

Meet the baby:

After a lovely Thanksgiving, today I went with my parents up to Sacramento and they adopted a miniature daschshund puppy.  He’s only four weeks old and they are going to pick him up on Christmas Eve.

ISN’T HE ADORABLE??!??!?!?!!?

We haven’t named him yet, but we’re thinking of good Germanic names to honor his heritage :)

Any suggestions?

Moo.

I am up in the Bay Area visiting the fam for Thanksgiving.  I drove up yesterday along Interstate 5.

For those of you who have never driven along the 5, I give you this:

Meet your meat.  That’s cows, people.  Cows as far as the eye can see.  Click on the pictures to enlarge them so you can really see.

The pictures don’t do it justice, because it is one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen.  I was also only able to stop alongside the road at a point where the crowd of cows was a little thinner than they are on the rest of the ranch.  For about a three mile stretch, they are shoulder to shoulder, for acres and acres and acres.  We’re talking tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of cows.  And the SMELL is unreal.  On a windy day, you can smell the cow crap from miles away.

So, for those of you who think that burger you eat comes from a cow who lived a long happy life in a lovely pasture grazing on nice fresh green grass, I direct your attention to the images above.

How to thoroughly embarass yourself

I spent a couple hours on Limewire this afternoon downloading all the stuff I listened to in 8th grade. Holy crap was I lame. Does anybody out there remember Nelson? How about Queensryche? Or Trixter? Yeah, me neither. I don’t know what excuse to give other than that when I was 13 I dug guys with long hair. I’m very very sorry. I’m also sorry for White Lion, Damn Yankees, Extreme and Winger. So very, very sorry.

Of course, I will never apologize for Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard or Guns N Roses.

Run For the Border

Looks like Canada is opening its arms wide for U.S. citizens wanting to flee George Bush’s America. There’s a guy holding seminars aboot why Canada is great, eh, and how to move there. And another company, Communicopia, has set up a website, CanadianAlternative.com Here are the reasons they cite why the Great White North is better than the good ol’ U.S. of A.

WHY MOVE TO CANADA? (from CanadianAlternative.com)

1. Canada has universal public health care.

2. Canada has no troops in Iraq.

3. Canada signed the Kyoto Protocol environmental treaty.

4. More than half of Canada’s provinces allow same-sex marriage.

5. The Canadian Senate recommends legalizing marijuana.

6. Canada has no law restricting abortion.

7. Canada has strict gun laws and relatively little violence.

8. The United Nations has ranked Canada the best country to live in for eight consecutive years.

9. Canada abolished the death penalty in 1976.

10. Canada has not run a federal deficit since 1996-97.

Sounds good to me. After election day we were definitely reigniting the plan to move to Vancouver. We had gone up there twice in the past year and were actually going to do it. I was getting used to the idea of saying “aboot” and “eh” all the time and wearing a scarf year round because it’s so freaking cold.

But we decided to stay. And this is why. It’s something Bill Maher said on the last Real Time with Bill Maher a couple weeks ago:

“Don’t leave America because you’re liberal. STAY because you are”.

It may not feel like it right now, but this is our country too. And someone is going to have to clean up George Bush’s mess after his ass leaves.

Still here

Lest you think I dropped off the face of the earth, I am still here. Have been down for the past day and half with a migraine (yay), but am feeling much better now. I bow to the God of Imitrex.

I have a meeting this afternoon regarding candle stuff, the outlook of which looks really good. Keep your fingers crossed!

Had a mini freak out last night about working from home and how it’s really driving me nuts. I know that it is only temporary, that once business with the judge picks up I’ll be working from downtown a couple days a week, and once I have everything in order for the candles that I will be having more meetings like the one I have today, and more work to do. But right now it’s tough. It’s really lonely.

I just thank god I have the most wonderful, most understanding and cuddly husband in the world. He brings me cold compresses for my head when I am writhing in pain from the migraine, he talks me down when I’m hysterical (oh, did I mention I’m heavily PMS’ing? Yeah, there’s that too.), and he holds me when I cry.

Thank you, Hawk, for being exactly what I need.

I love you.

Perfect :)

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more
closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the
plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White
House will be adorned by a downright moron.” –H.L. Mencken (1880 - 1956)

Ahhh, Venice.

Had a great weekend with my parents in town. Friday was my mom’s birthday (yay!) so we celebrated with a delicious dinner on Saturday night at one of our favorite restaurants, Grace, in Hollywood. Mom and Dad hadn’t been there before and really liked it. I was really glad to share it with them. We always have such a great time over a good meal and a few glasses of wine.

Also, on Saturday we went on a walk through the Venice canals. For those of you who don’t know, Venice, CA was designed to basically look just like Venice, Italy. There are a series of canals running through it. Nowadays, most of Venice is pretty skeezy. When you think of Venice, you think Muscle Beach and the tacky boardwalk with lots of ranting homeless people, street performers and lame souvenir shops. But walk a few blocks inland and you get to the canals. It’s unbelievable. The houses along them range in style anywhere from Italian style palazzos to Cape Cod to little bungalows. Just beautiful. And on a nice day, defintely worth a stroll.
