Run For the Border

Looks like Canada is opening its arms wide for U.S. citizens wanting to flee George Bush’s America. There’s a guy holding seminars aboot why Canada is great, eh, and how to move there. And another company, Communicopia, has set up a website, CanadianAlternative.com Here are the reasons they cite why the Great White North is better than the good ol’ U.S. of A.

WHY MOVE TO CANADA? (from CanadianAlternative.com)

1. Canada has universal public health care.

2. Canada has no troops in Iraq.

3. Canada signed the Kyoto Protocol environmental treaty.

4. More than half of Canada’s provinces allow same-sex marriage.

5. The Canadian Senate recommends legalizing marijuana.

6. Canada has no law restricting abortion.

7. Canada has strict gun laws and relatively little violence.

8. The United Nations has ranked Canada the best country to live in for eight consecutive years.

9. Canada abolished the death penalty in 1976.

10. Canada has not run a federal deficit since 1996-97.

Sounds good to me. After election day we were definitely reigniting the plan to move to Vancouver. We had gone up there twice in the past year and were actually going to do it. I was getting used to the idea of saying “aboot” and “eh” all the time and wearing a scarf year round because it’s so freaking cold.

But we decided to stay. And this is why. It’s something Bill Maher said on the last Real Time with Bill Maher a couple weeks ago:

“Don’t leave America because you’re liberal. STAY because you are”.

It may not feel like it right now, but this is our country too. And someone is going to have to clean up George Bush’s mess after his ass leaves.
