Ten Years

Today marks ten years that Hawk and I have been together. Wow. That’s a long time. I was only 18 when we started dating, but I knew right away that I would be with him for the rest of my life.

To celebrate, tonight we are staying at the Bonaventure hotel in downtown LA tonight and eating dinner here. Yum.

I love you baby, here’s to many more decades together.

Creator of Berenstain Bears dies

Stan Berenstain, the co-creator of the Berenstain Bears, has died at 82. I’m sad because those were some of my favorite books when I was a kid. I loved how all the other bears in the stories had actual names (like Cousin Freddie) but all the main characters were “Papa Bear”, “Mama Bear”, “Brother Bear” and “Sister Bear”. What were Papa and Mama’s names before they had kids?

Things that make you go ‘hmmmmmmmm’…

Displaced!

Our house is being fumigated for, ew, termites for a couple days. On the brightside, by now they’re ALL DEAD! TAKE THAT ICKY BUGS!!

The cat is being boarded at the vet, and the dogs are staying with us at Cooper and Alicia’s place. The dogs are totally not sure what to make of it. They’re like, “Not to be ungrateful, because we love riding in the car and we love seeing Uncle Cooper, but why are we here and why can’t I poop on my own lawn?” It makes for lots of pacing and whining. Last night we slept on a futon on the floor of the dining room, and Maggie licked Hawk’s head all night. Didn’t make for the most restful sleep.

Fat and Happy

Well my first attempt at cooking Thanksgiving was a success! Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and we had a great time. It was me, Hawk, my brother Nate and his friend Dan, his brothers Jeremy and Nick, and Michael and Christine & Cormac.

We had a great time. Nate kicked ass and helped me with the gravy, and Nick and Jeremy sent Christine on the first unable-to-stop-laugh-until-I-thought-she-was-going-to-puke laughing jag I’ve ever seen out of her and it was awesome.

Today I am thankful for my family and friends. I am a very lucky woman.

OK for real this time…

Nick and Jessica are over.

Kind of anti-climactic now, ain’t it?

Happy Thanksgiving!!

So I am cooking my first Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow night. Pray for me. It’s going to be a small group, just me, Hawk, my brother, his brother Nick and Nick’s friend Eric, and possibly his brother Jeremy, and even less likely, Michael, Christine and Cormac. So, definitely 5 people, maybe 8 (and a half, but he won’t eat much).

Hawk is making himself a Tofurkey, but for us normal people (I kid, I kid), I’m making a 7lb. turkey breast. I’m a wee bit nervous as I’ve never cooked a turkey before. We’re also having stuffing, two different kinds of potatoes (regular mashed and whipped spiced sweet potatoes), a green bean and red pepper dish, cranberry sauce, and two kinds of pie. Boo-ya.

And my folks are currently on their way here. They win.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Suck

Dude. Worst movie EVER. Possibly even worse than the last Star Wars. I’m such a fan of the books, especially this one, that I was really horrified, and actually borderline offended that the movie was so damn bad.

Don’t waste your money. Read the book instead. It’s infinitely better.

Welcome to the World, Baby Boy!

I am pleased to announce that our best friends, Michael and Christine, had a baby boy this morning. His name is Cormac, and he was so excited to meet his mom and dad that he was five weeks early! He’s 5 lbs, 10 oz, healthy and perfect :) Congratulations to them on their brand new family!

Nuggets of Wisdom

Today on Dooce’s site, I found several small bits of wisdom that really rang true to me. Now these are totally out of context, and in her case relate to her relationship with her daughter, Leta.

In my case they mean something different, but not too far off. Those of you who know me well will know what I mean:

- GET RID OF THE EXPECTATIONS ALREADY
- I am still waiting for things to happen like I imagined they would
- …pushing me to become a more patient person, a much bigger person than I thought possible

I love finding little bits of wisdom like this where I’m not expecting them, things that give me unexpected strength on a day where I’m having a really hard time.

Baby’s Named a Bad Bad Thing

This is awesome. An excellent collection of awful, awful baby names, under such categories as “Brought to You by the Letter Y” and “God Wants You to Name the Baby After Him”, with lovely snarky little comments after them.

Personal favorites:

For a girl Tierrainney Mackanzie [last name]
for a boy Tristin Gabrielle Reese [last name]

Oh yeah. Every boy wants Gabrielle as a middle name.. And that girl’s name could use a few more syllables. Hell, if you’re going to give your kid a cool super-villain name like Tyranny, spell it right!

and

May I suggest:
Calaya Tanith
Calaya Branwen
Calaya Delphine
Calaya Faerin
Calaya Gwendolen
Calaya Maeve
Calaya Magdalen
Calaya Mairead
Calaya Niamh
Calaya Nimue
Calaya Roisin (ro-SHEEN)
Calaya Siobhan (sha-VON)
Calaya Talwen
Fainne Maeve
Fainne Roisin
Fainne Tanith

No. No, you bloody well may not suggest them. Please leave us alone and resume reading “The Annotated Legends of the Runes of the Mystical Arthurian Knighthood of the Sacred Circle of the Shield of the Spell-Casting Princess Faeries of the Grail of Blackwynne Castle. Book II.”
