Today was the IUI.
We got up at the ridiculous hour of 5:45 AM so we could be in Beverly Hills for a 7AM appointment. Those of you may remember when we first went in for Hawk’s sperm count that the conditions were less than ideal. This time, we got a room to ourselves and I got to, shall we say, “assist”. And if I hadn’t been able to help, the thoughtful folks at the lab provided movies and magazines to aid Hawk in his endeavors.
We had to wait an hour while they prepared the sample, so we went and had some breakfast. When we came back to pick it up (so we could then bring it to my doctor), Hawk asked the guy if everything was “alright”. The guy smiled and showed him a piece of paper with all the data on it - sperm count, motility, etc. “See for yourself. You’re a stud!” Needless to say, Hawk’s chest puffed up just a little bit at that ![]()
It was very odd transporting all of Hawk’s little soldiers around in a paper bag. It was in a plastic syringe, and the tech had told me to be careful not to depress the end of it, so of course I was totally paranoid that I was somehow going to accidentally press it and that morning’s efforts would end up all over the passenger’s seat of my car, or on the floor of my doctor’s waiting room. However, the precious cargo made it there intact.
Once at my doctor’s office everything went smoothly. The nurse got us all set up. As she got everything prepared, she asked what kind of “wash” the lab had done on the sperm. I told her I didn’t know, but it was on the sheet they gave us. “Oh, I was just curious, because I’ve never seen it pink before”. Sure enough, we look at the syringe, and the stuff inside had a definite pink tint to it. “Well, it certainly wasn’t that color when I gave it to him,” Hawk said. The nurse got a good laugh out of that.
My doctor came in a few minutes later and got to work. The whole thing only lasted about two minutes and was only mildly uncomfortable. Very much just like a pap smear, except he had to open my cervix to fit the catheter through and that pinched a bit. If you’ve never had your cervix pinched before, let me tell you, it’s no fun. Once everything was in place, he said, “OK, boys…swim!” and it was over.
So now I go back in a week for a progesterone test and we see if it worked. It will definitely be a hard wait. Keep your fingers crossed for us!
