Currently totally obsessed with the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou. If you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you know that I am not a religious person, nor do I actually believe in god, but damn do I love me some gospel music. Alison Krauss singing “Down to the River to Pray” ABSOLUTELY KILLS ME.
Woo! Got in today’s post four minutes before midnight. Haven’t missed a day yet!
We went to see Feist play at the Universal Amphitheater. She was a.ma.zing. Awesome show.
Although, going to Universal means having to walk through the Universal City Walk, and I feel like a bad person for just being there. It’s so…neon. And full of chain restaurants and crap souvenir stores. Ick.
Going to see Ryan Adams on July 19 at the Wilshire Theater in Beverly Hills. Squeee!
Except Ticketmaster.com is retarded and wouldn’t let me buy the three tickets I wanted all at once, I had to buy them one at a time, so my friends and I are all near each other, but not sitting together. Stupid Ticketmaster.
How excited am I that Ryan Adams is coming out with a new album in a few weeks? And how good is his new single, “Two”?
Very.
This girl can sing.
The Story (Live) by Brandi Carlile
I know I’ve pimped her before, but Brandi Carlile is unbelievable. I’m trying to get tickets to go see her at The Troubador tomorrow night but it’s sold out, so I might not be able to and I’m kicking myself for not being more on the ball about it. Oh well. Her new album comes out tomorrow as well.
[This link is to a video of her singing her new single, The Story, live. You need Real Player installed, but it's worth it.]
Our weekend was very nice and mellow, for the most part. Friday we went to our neighborhood pub and had some dinner, Saturday we went out our friends Tony and Kristen for dinner, and Sunday I spent in bed, horrendously ill with a migraine coupled with nausea so bad that every time I moved I threw up. Not fun. I feel much better today, thank god.
In other news, one of my favorite musicians is Brandi Carlile, and she is coming out with a new album in April. This song, The Story, is the title song off the new record and I LOVE it. It’s the first song I’ve ever listened to and started to cry because I felt like she reached into my head and wrote a song about what she pulled out. Give her a listen, won’t you?
Freakgirl posted this on her blog this morning and I have to jump on the bandwagon.
Here are some of my picks for worst lyrics:
She said to me, “Go steady on me.
Won’t you tell me what the Wise Men said?
When they came down from Heaven,
Smoked nine ’til seven,
All the shit that they could find.
- James Blunt, “Wise Men”
There’s also a line in this song where the three wise men have a “semi by the sea”. Wha?
Yeah Yeah, God is great
Yeah, Yeah, God is good
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
- Joan Osborne, “What if God was One of Us”
It’s like how singers insert “baby” into songs all the time, but that doesn’t really work when you’re talking about God, I guess.
Look at this photograph
Everytime I do it makes me laugh
How did our eyes get so red
And what the hell is on Joey’s head
- Nickelback, “Photograph”
Really, what the hell is on Joey’s head?
What are your picks for worst song lyrics?
Last night we saw Rob Zombie at the Wiltern. I realize it’s the first real metal show I’ve ever been to and it was awesome. They played for almost an hour and a half, and it was non-stop, high energy the whole time.
The best part - during “More Human than Human” a TEN FOOT ROBOT came out on stage and harassed the guys in the band, and later on (I don’t remember what song), four or five giant skeletons with LASERS FOR EYES came out. It was so kick ass.
And I must say, that man is one sexy beast.
Hawk and I went to see Brandi Carlile play at The Troubadour last night. Sigh. She was wonderful. She’s got such great energy, and her voice is so sweet and clear and strong. Unfortunately, I wasn’t feeling very well, so we didn’t stay the whole show (plus she didn’t go on until 10 - way past my bedtime these days), but I heard her play all my favorite songs. I even started to cry in the middle of “Fall Apart Again” when she sang “I don’t dream ’cause I cannot sleep”. I know, I’m a freak, but, hey, I’ve had a rough couple weeks and I haven’t been sleeping very well.
Anyway, here are the lyrics to “Fall Apart Again”. It’s my favorite song, so I thought I’d share. (Actually, if you click on the link to her website above, the song will start playing automatically. Enjoy!)
Long is the day, take it away
Hold it up and you don’t let it fall
Cause devils play, was yesterday
And I don’t care about it that at all.
I just smile once in a while
’cause I don’t want the lines on my face
I sit right here, holding the years
And I count all the stars in space
You all apart again and you can find a friend
Don’t turn to someone else because they won’t understand…
Self respect goes unexpressed
I don’t dream ’cause I cannot sleep
And I think the world of myself
But the world doesn’t think much of me
As long as the day is full of time, there will always be room
for your hand in mine
Don’t you fall apart again and you can find a friend
Don’t turn to someone else ’cause they won’t understand
I don’t want to hear you say that you miss yesterday
If you don’t like what you see
That means nothing to me
No one’s home I’m alone with my music and my TV
And I still say yesterday is best when left asleep
You fall apart again and you can find a friend
Don’t turn to someone else because they won’t understand
I don’t want to hear
You say that you miss yesterday
If you don’t like what you see
That means nothing to me
