Showered with Love

My baby shower was this past weekend, and it was one of the most lovely afternoons I’ve ever spent.  About twenty of my favorite women, all in one room, and all there to celebrate the imminent arrival of my daughter.  My best friends Kristen and Christine organized the shower, and it was great - yummy food, a delicious black and white cake from my favorite bakery in Silverlake.  So many lovely gifts.  My friends know me so well - there was a big stuffed woolly sheep (I have a thing about woolly sheep), there were also pink bloomers printed with skulls and crossbones, complete with ruffles on the butt, and in honor of my grease monkey husband, a onesie with a motorcycle print.

The lovely Stacy was also in attendance, and she gave me a beautiful handmade necklace with my daughter’s birthstone (if she is born on time!), and her name - Áine.  It’s pronounced Awn-ya, and we chose the Irish Gaelic spelling, mainly because we liked it, but I also have quite a bit of the Irish in me from my Dad’s side.  It means brilliance or radiance, and in Irish lore, Áine is the goddess of love, growth and cattle.  Can’t forget the cattle!

It was so overwhelming, to see so much love for me, my husband and my daughter in one room.  Both my mom and Hawk’s mom traveled to town in order to be there, and that was the best.  Friends from work, friends from school, friends from the internet, friends I’ve met through other friends, all together in celebration of new life.  So many people love Áine already.  She is one lucky little girl, and I am one very blessed mommy, for many, many different reasons.

Playground

Yesterday I got to go to the park with my friend Christine and her little boy, Cormac.  He is such a joy and it is so much fun to watch him play, to see him run and climb.  Hawk and I were there the day he was born, and it is amazing to see the beautiful little boy he has become.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am grateful for so many things this year. This year was particularly difficult for so many reasons, but I have an amazing (not to mention handsome, sexy, brilliant…I could keep going) husband who stood by my side through all of it. I also have wonderfully supportive parents and friends, so above all else I am thankful for having that love in my life.

But here are a few other things I am thankful for that aren’t so - for lack of a better word - obvious:

I am thankful for the gift that was Maggie. I am thankful that I got to spend almost five years with her as part of our family. I learned so much from her, her love of life, the joyfulness with which she approached everything. Her loyalty and unconditional love and affection, her tenacity.

I am thankful for the gift that is my job, or more specifically, the gift that is the amazing women I work with. I’ve worked there during the most difficult time of my life thus far, and they have taught me how to be strong and compassionate through adversity. I would not be the woman I am today without the four of them in my life.

Finally, I am thankful for the gift that is my blog, because it has given me an outlet for my feelings surrounding everything that has happened this year that I would not have had otherwise, given me a space to process my thoughts, and it has led some amazing people my way who have renewed my faith in humanity with their willingness to reach out to a perfect stranger. I am thankful for all of you who are my “internet friends”, who I have never met but who share a little bit of yourselves on your own blogs, that make me feel not quite so alone in this big, scary, messy, wonderful world of ours.

Happy Thanksgiving, all of you. I hope today finds you warm, safe, and loved.

What a Lovely Day

I leave for France tomorrow, and today I had lunch with the beautiful and fabulous Stacie. Stacie is going to cater my 30th birthday party in a couple weeks, so we were meeting to discuss menu ideas and other such details. But that took up about ten minutes of our two hour lunch, because the rest of the time we talked about a million other things. I feel like I’ve known her for years. Thanks for a lovely afternoon, sweets!

Back in the Land of the Living

Meeting Megan on Sunday night was awesome, but boy did it hurt the next day! We got a little carried away with the cocktails and merriment, and I was down for the count with a migraine all day yesterday. Oh well, it was totally worth it, because Megs? She rocks. So funny, and warm and beautiful, with a gorgeous smile and hearty laugh. We also met up with a couple other friends of hers for a drink at the Formosa, and those guys were awesome too.

I love the internets. How else could I have met Megan, or any of the other countless people I call my “internet friends”? How cool.

Now we shall all hold hands and sing “It’s A Small World After All”.

Wedding Bells

This weekend I was in San Francisco for my friend Maggie’s wedding. Maggie is one of my oldest friends, from when we sat next to each other in homeroom freshman year of high school. She moved to Germany a couple years ago and met Eric, and they got married last Friday at San Francisco City Hall. Apparently German bureaucracy is too much of a pain in the ass to navigate (too much paperwork), so they just came back to the States to get married. It was an extremely low-key affair, with just me and her brother acting as witnesses. There was going to be a party at her grandmother’s house the next day where all the family would show up.

I met Maggie in the city on Friday morning and went with her to do some last minute errands before the ceremony, then I went with her while she got her hair done. She had this awesome vintage hat with a veil, so the guy did her hair Veronica Lake-style and secured the hat for her. I was getting lots of instruction from the guy about placement of bobby pins and how to smooth out her hair for pictures and stuff. I didn’t bother to tell him he was talking to the wrong person, that hair is a total mystery to me, but I just smiled and nodded and pretended I knew what he was talking about.

Success! Here she is with the hat:

Then it was back to the hotel to get ready. She had this gorgeous emerald green vintage dress that she had gotten in L.A. several years ago and she looked fucking amazing. I just kept taking pictures of her because she was so stunning.

With the happy couple ready to go, we headed off to City Hall. There was a lot of waiting for our turn, but they actually got to have the little ceremony in the rotunda, which, if you’ve never seen it, is really beautiful. But not as beautiful as Maggie looked:

Here’s Eric during his vows:

He got all misty-eyed, which was very sweet.

The ceremony was short and sweet, then it was back to the hotel to celebrate! We went to a restaurant next to the hotel and had a couple bottles of champagne and our other friend from high school, Elizabeth, came and met us.

Here’s Maggie and Eric showing off the new bling:

Eric was very excited about his ring and kept telling everyone, “It has dragons on it!”

All in all it was a very mellow celebration (we were back at the hotel in bed by about 10:30 that night), but it was so much fun, and I was so glad to be a part of it. Maggie and Eric are so happy and I can tell they love each other very much. I wish them all the best!

Merriment

We had our annual Christmas party last night, and it was wonderful, as always. We had quite a large crowd, and things didn’t really wind down until about 1am. Count on the young’uns (my brother, his girlfriend and his roommate) to help us close out the night. To be fair, a whole bunch of people left at once and I told Nate they couldn’t leave yet, because we were drunk and weren’t done being social.

I’m moving a little slow today due to copious consumption of champagne, but I’m not in as bad of shape as Hawk, who drank nothing but red wine and is huuuuuuuurting. I’ll stick to the bubbly, thanks.

Here are some photos from the night:
