We had a lovely weekend in New Mexico visiting my in laws. They have a beautiful home and we spent lots of time relaxing outside. This also included trying out Nick’s new air rifle (lots of shooting at soda cans and cactus). Danielle and Lawrence have this gorgeous covered patio, so even when it rained cats and dogs on Saturday, we could sit outside and enjoy. Apparently they’ve gotten quite a bit of rain the past couple months and I’ve never seen it so green out there. Mostly, it was just nice to see Hawk so happy being with his family. They are truly wonderful people and it was great to visit with them.
When we were planning our trip, we knew we wanted to spend a few days on our own in Switzerland after we split off from Hawk’s family. I started poking around online and in a Switzerland guide book and chose the little town of Mürren at random. It is nestled up in the Alps, about an hour up the mountain from Interlaken. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful places either of us have ever been.
Switzerland in general had been kind of light on snow all winter, and the evening we got there (after four train changes - Zurich to Bern to Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen to Mürren) I remarked to Hawk that I was kind of disappointed there wasn’t more snow. I shouldn’t have worried. It started snowing that night and didn’t stop the whole time we were there. It was the lightest, fluffiest snow I’d ever encountered. Perfect for snowballs or pushing your husband into a snowdrift ![]()

How one gets up the mountain from Lauterbrünnen to Mürren - a box on cables. Don’t look down!
Aside to my Dad: Hawk, Jeremy, Nick and I sat in the hotel bar last night and there was a piano player/lounge singer guy, and I requested “Walking in Memphis” off his list of songs. You haven’t lived till you’ve heard this song sung in a mixture of English, French AND German.
After a hard day of drinking wine and strolling around medieval French villages, there’s nothing like watching a movie on your laptop in front of a roaring fire.
This family is a living commercial for Apple.
We had a wonderful dinner at Le Tilleul again last night. I had a salad with fresh asparagus, prosciutto and parmesan shortbread to start, poulet farmier (Farmer’s Chicken) with potatoes in a spiced cider broth, and molten chocolate cake with coconut cream and pistachio drizzle for dessert. We were the only people in the restaurant last night, and it’s the type of place you dream of finding in France. A tiny little hole in the wall where the food is better than anything you’ve ever tasted. Yum.
Right now it’s 2:30pm and I’ve only been up for an hour. Thanks to my Ambien’ed, snoring husband, I didn’t fall asleep until 7am. Stupid stupid jet lag. We’re not sure what we’re going to do today, I think maybe go into Antibes, or a little village near Grasse called Mougins.
